Serra d’Espadà

ETHICAL BEEKEEPING

In the Serra d’Espadà, the hives are located in a Mediterranean mountain landscape marked by sandstone soils, cork oaks, and vegetation closely linked to moisture and the shade of the ravines.

It is a setting different from other Valencian mountain ranges, with well-preserved cork oak forests, scrubland, old terraces, and a long tradition of forestry and agricultural use. This combination of forest, stone, and traditional crops shapes the seasonal blooms and gives the honey its character.

Serra d’Espadà

The honey from the Serra d’Espadà originates in a region with a history deeply connected to rural life, the forest, and the traditional uses of the mountain landscape. It is a mountain range of small villages, farmhouses, terraces, paths, and areas that have experienced depopulation, yet still retain a strong local identity.

In this landscape, cork oaks play a special role. The cork oak forests, favoured by the sandstone soils, are an essential part of the character of Espadà and coexist with heather, rockrose, rosemary, thyme, strawberry trees, mastic trees, and other Mediterranean plants. Flowering depends greatly on rainfall, the shade of the ravines, and the conditions of each season.

It is also an environment where traditional fruit trees are being recovered, helping to preserve cultivated biodiversity and the agricultural heritage of the mountain range. Bees work among this mosaic of forest, scrubland, and former cultivated land, producing an organic honey closely linked to tradition, the forest landscape, and the way of life that still endures in the mountains.
